Ingredients:
- 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp (1.5g) salt
- 6 cups (1.2kg) peeled and sliced apples
- 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar, packed
- 2 tbsp (16g) cornstarch
- 1 tsp (2g) ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp (0.5g) ground nutmeg
- 1 tbsp (15ml) lemon juice
- 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup (115g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp (1g) ground cinnamon
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
- Cream together softened butter and granulated sugar, then stir in 2 cups of flour and salt until a soft dough forms.
- Press the dough evenly into the bottom of the pan and bake for 15 minutes or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden.
- In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, 1/2 cup brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg until every slice is coated.
- Remove the crust from the oven and spread the apple mixture evenly over the warm base, smoothing the top with a spatula.
- In a separate bowl, rub cold butter into 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and cinnamon using your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the crumble evenly over the apples and bake for another 35-40 minutes until the topping is a deep mahogany gold and the apple juices are bubbling around the edges.
