  • Milk 2% or whole milk recommended
  • Broth Chicken or Vegetable
  • Butter

Step 1: Cook the Grits

  • In a saucepan, cook the grits according to the package instructions. This usually involves bringing water or broth to a boil, then stirring in the grits and simmering until thickened, which typically takes about 15-30 minutes.
  • Once the grits are cooked, remove them from heat and stir in butter and freshly grated cheddar cheese until melted and well combined.

Step 2: Chill the Grits

  • Spread the cheese grits in a greased sheet pan, ensuring they form an even layer.
  • Refrigerate the pan until the grits are very firm, which usually takes about 2 hours to overnight.

Step 3: Shape the Grit Cakes

  • After chilling, use a biscuit cutter to shape the grits into circles or cut them into squares using a knife.
  • Move the formed grit cakes onto a baking tray covered with aluminum foil and coated with cooking spray.

Step 4: Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat the oven to broil.

Step 5: Brush with Butter

  • Brush the tops of the grit cakes with melted butter, ensuring they are evenly coated.

Step 6: Broil the Grit Cakes
